Water
Safety and Drowning Prevention Presentation
The
presentation is geared to the age of the children and covers twelve basic rules
for water safety in and around the water and swimming pools.
This presentation is done by Mitch Goldstein, “Mr. Mitch”, Swim
Teacher and Director of Dolfun Swim Lessons for 28 years.
This presentation is based on 5 years of Romper Room presentations and
participation in Water Safety Month with LA Mayor Tom Bradley and former
Olympian Mark Spitz.
Mr.
Mitch uses dolls, props and a story format to discuss the desires and feelings
that children may have about the water that could lead to a dangerous situation.
He teaches children as well as parents about water safety and how to
prevent drowning and other dangers.
The
first rule is to never swim alone.
The
second rule is to play safe and be safe around the pool (look before you leap,
no running, no pushing, etc.)
The
third rule is to know the pool – shallow end versus deep end, and what the
ropes and markings mean.
The
fourth rule is to observe the weather and the conditions for swimming.
The
fifth rule is how to use the slide and diving board safely.
Next
rules are progressive swimming, safe activities in pool (no pulling on peoples
legs, no dunking, etc.)
Other
rules are limiting exposure to sun, staying outside the pool after eating, using
restrooms rather than the pool.
Another
rule is telling someone if you see something unsafe or dangerous.
It’s ok to tell!
Especially
important is what to do if you fall in – swim to the side and get out.
Also
included is a review of basic swim techniques: head down, blow bubbles, arms go
round and round, kick on top of the water.
This
presentation is fun and educational with the focus on water safety and the
prevention of drowning.
This
presentation can be given in a 30-45 minutes or condensed into small sections.
